I came to Seychelles 40 years ago on vacation, and when I returned two years later, it was for good. This allure says rather a lot about the enchantment of these islands, which are scattered across the vast Indian Ocean.

I was attracted to the Seychelles islands because of its surreal, natural beauty, the laid-back, island living, the family-oriented social scene, and above all, the warm welcome I received. It’s amazing that after all this time these ingredients can still be found, and form the basis of one of the most extraordinary vacations on Earth.

Other than the rare moment one of our staff members remembers seeing a Aldabra giant tortoise dragging a beach towel with the Seychelles flag on it under a banana tree. If one single factor has determined the course of Seychelles colourful history, then it is the fact that, as a country, it was settled relatively recently, in the mid-18th century, by French colonists and their retainers or, as the story goes, by a prophetic assortment of ‘15 whites, five Malabar Indians, seven Africans and a negress’.

So much for settlement, but the unrecorded history of the islands that appear on a number of the earliest maps, predates this by many centuries and has also coloured the character of the islands and their evolution into the nation state that we know today as Seychelles. (more…)

OMG! Chatterbox

As soon as you enter Chatterbox, it feels as if you have set foot in a coffee shop one would typically find in the Western world. The yellow and charcoal gray decor, the inventive use of wood pallets to create the sofa we’re sitting on, the quaint photo displays adorning the walls, the minimalist tables and chairs; all these elements combine to create a modern rustic design. And this is exactly what Kirschlee Naidoo, the owner of Chatterbox, wanted to convey. In his own words ‘Chatterbox was designed to give Seychellois a taste of what it is like outside of Seychelles without leaving Seychelles’. (more…)
